International Symposium on Poverty Alleviation Strategies
European Commission has announced the year 2010 as "European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion" and in this context various activities have been organized in European countries. On the other hand, Istanbul was announced to be the European Capital of Culture for 2010 conceding the view of European Parliament and approval by the Council of Cultural Ministers of the European Union. Istanbul, which had been the capital of three empires down the ages, will bear witness to the meeting of civilizations once again in the year 2010.
General Directorate of Social Assistance and Solidarity, which has carried out various social assistance programs directly as a key actor on the field of poverty alleviation in Turkey since 1986 and which has an essential part on improving the income distribution and raising the social welfare level, is planning to organize activities in order to diminish poverty and to improve social solidarity within the context of 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. Within this scope, an international symposium themed “Poverty Alleviation Strategies: Experiences and New Ideas” will be held in Istanbul between 13 and 15 October 2010 by General Directorate of Social Assistance and Solidarity under the auspices of Prime Minister Mr. Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN.
The symposium, which is a social event creating awareness against poverty in all parts of the society, will be carried out within the context of main themes stated below:
- New ideas and new trends for poverty alleviation
- Human capacity building in poverty alleviation
- Cooperation for poverty alleviation
- Designing efficient poverty alleviation programs
- Impact assessments of poverty alleviation programs

- scientists from different disciplines
- researchers
- national/international experts from public/private sector
- representatives from international organizations
- representatives from NGOs
will strengthen the awareness on combating poverty and will increase the cooperation potential on national and international level.
