Securing the Rights and Livelihoods of Rural Women in Africa in the Context of the Food Crisis and Climate Change

In Africa, a great majority of the population lives in rural areas and is fully dependent on land and other natural resources for its livelihood: e.g. Niger (83%); Rwanda and Malawi (81%). Women make a great proportion of rural populations due to male migration (UN Statistical Division Database).

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), 31 % of rural households are headed by women, compared to 17% in Latin America and the Caribbean and 14% in Asia (UN Statistical Division Database).Issues facing rural women go beyond agricultural production to encompass a broad range of human, social, political and economic rights. UNWOMEN will strategically partner with sister UN organizations, regional organizations, rural women’s networks and development partners for coordinated and transformative action to meaningfully improve rural women’s condition and status.

Report of the Secretary General: World Survey on the Role of Women in Development

The World Survey on the Role of Women in Development focuses on emerging development issues that have an impact on the role of women in the economy, and is presented to the Second Committee of the General Assembly at five-year intervals. The present report is the sixth World Survey on the Role of Women in Development. In its resolution 59/248, the General Assembly requested the Secretary General to update the World Survey in 2009. In its resolution 60/210, the Assembly decided that the theme for the survey would be “Women’s control over economic resources and access to financial resources, including microfinance”.

Analyzing Budgets From A Gender Perspective

This presentation explains the terms used in gender mainstreaming work such as gender analysis, gender budgeting, gender equality and gender equity. It describes the gaps existing in gender equality and comparative strategies employed by governments to address them. The presentation also includes steps on implementing gender based programming and policy recommendations on overcoming gender disparities.

Parliament and the Budgetary Process, Including From a Gender Perspective: Regional Seminar for Parliaments of South-West Asia

This report compiles the results of a seminar entitled, "Parliament and the Budgetary Process, Including From a Gender Perspective," held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in May 2003. This report compiles the speeches and presentations made during the seminar entitled, "Parliament and the Budgetary Process, Including from a Gender Perspective," held in Manila, Philippines in July 2002. The seminar discussed themes such as budgetary processes, gender budgeting, the role of the auditor, and issues of accountability and transparency. It also focused on effects of the Asian economic crisis and the ways to strengthen institutions to minimize the effects of economic destabilization in the future.
