The Gender Gap Exists When It Comes to Who Donates to Political Campaigns

Source:

The gender gap in American salaries is well documented, but it turns out this disparity in pay extends into the political realm as well. Women also donate much less to political campaigns than their male counterparts.

So far in the 2014 election cycle, billionaire and Democratic donor Tom Steyer has donated over $18.2 million to political causes. In comparison Virginia James, a self-employed investor and conservative donor has only given $1.8 million to political causes, more than any other woman woman. Overall the top 10 male donors have given a whopping $51.1 million this year, while the top 10 female donors have only contributed a little over $8 million.

According to political insiders, there are a number of reasons for this gender gap in political donating. Most obvious is the fact that politics still very much remains an old boys club, with the same circles of men hosting political fundraisers, soliciting the same individuals for contributions, to support the same male politicians, who make up 82 percent of Congress.
