Kenyatta Nominations Fall Short of Gender Threshold, Kenya

Source:

President Uhuru Kenyatta's 26 nominations for principal secretary positions only include seven women, prompting criticism for failing to meet the constitutionally mandated one-third quota for female nominees, Kenya's Daily Nation reported Saturday (June 8th).

Gender and Equality Commission Chairperson Winifred Lichuma said her team would take the matter under review, as a minimum of nine positions should be allocated to women according to the constitution.

"Constitutional thresholds like the gender rule are matters of law," said Suba parliamentarian John Mbadi. "There can be no excuse for violating them."
