Somalia: Puntland Leaders Set Quotas for Women in July Local Elections

Puntland regional leaders met Tuesday (May 21st) to encourage women's participation in the upcoming local council elections in July, setting a quota for desired participation, Somalia's Garowe Online reported.

Government officials, political party members, United Nations officials, members of the Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission and representatives of a local women's association gathered at the Puntland Development and Research Centre compound in Garowe to discuss the quota.

Participants agreed that there should be quotas for women's participation in all three levels of Puntland district councils, ranging from 26% to 29%. For districts with 27 councillors, women should constitute seven; for districts with 21 councillors, women should  constitute six; and for districts with 17, women should constitute five.
