VIDEO: When Women Win
"When Women Win" offers an insider’s look into the impressive strides that women have made in the past ten years, achieving greater political representation in governments around the world. Merely a decade ago women comprised less than 5% of elected officials worldwide. Recently, that number has jumped to 16%, an impressive achievement for women, communities, and governments across the globe. Increases in women’s political representation are due in large part to the empowerment of women, affirmative action measures, improved media coverage of women candidates and officials, and efforts by organizations such as NDI to provide women with the skills they need to succeed.
Women elected officials possess the power to transform societies around the world. In this video, case studies from Morocco, Mexico, Nepal, Senegal and Jordan highlight NDI initiatives to increase the confidence of women candidates, build skills, work with young women running for election and offer training sessions for trainers. More than ever before, democratically elected women are influencing national legislation, setting political agendas and empowering other women to push for positive change. While we still have a long road to political gender equality, significant advances in recent years offer evidence that investing in women candidates can lead to tangible change. As the video suggests, women’s political empowerment does not only benefit women but also has lasting effects on communities and countries around the world. The video allows little doubt that “when women win, we all win.”
