Iran is to appoint its first female ambassador since the 1979 Islamic revolution, marking a breakthrough for women in government under the moderate president,Hassan Rouhani

Marzieh Afkham, who is the country’s first foreign ministry spokeswoman, will head a mission in east Asia, the state news agency reported. It is not clear to which country she will be posted as her appointment has yet to be announced officially.

But, if a striking image captured during Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif's introduction is any indication, Iran still has a long way to go when it comes to gender equality.

An electoral candidate who won a place on a city council in Iran has reportedly been barred from taking up the seat because she is too attractive.During the polls in the city of Qazvin, 27-year-old Nina Siahkali Moradi received 10,000 votes, placing her 14th out of 163 candidates.

Iranian president Hasan Rouhani on Monday appointed Elham Aminzadeh, a law and public policy professor at Tehran University, as Vice-President of Legal Affairs, effectively making her the first woman in the Islamic Republic’s history to hold the influential position.

Rouhani’s nomination of Aminzadeh, who holds a degree in international law from the University of Glasgow, will still have to be officially approved by the Iranian parliament.
