The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has today condemned the attack on Afghan woman MP Shukria Barakzai on 16th November and once again urged authorities in the country to do more to ensure the voices of women political leaders are not extinguished or intimidated.

Although Barakzai, a high-profile women’s rights activist and parliamentarian, survived the suicide bomb attack in Kabul, three people were killed and many more reportedly injured.

Zimbabwe currently has 85 women parliamentarians in the National Assembly compared to 185 men.

This means that the country would not meet the 2015 Sadc deadline, as the next elections in Zimbabwe are only expected in 2018.

Of the 85 women parliamentarians, only 25 were directly elected to Parliament while the other 60 are in the House of Assembly courtesy of a constitutional provision which reserves seats for women.

Popular Somali musician and member of parliament Saado Ali Warsame has been shot dead by Islamist militants.

She was killed along with her bodyguard in a drive-by shooting in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

A spokesman for the Islamist al-Shabab group, Abdulaziz Abu Musab, told the BBC that she was targeted for her politics and not her music.

The BBC's Mohammed Moalimu in Mogadishu says she is the fourth MP to be killed this year.

Human rights activist Salwa Bugaighis was shot dead by unknown assailants at her home in the restive east Libyan city of Benghazi late Wednesday, hospital and security sources said.

“Unknown hooded men wearing military uniforms attacked Mrs Bugaighis in her home and opened fire on her,” said a security official, who did not wish to be named.

She was shot several times and taken to hospital in critical condition, where she died shortly afterwards, a spokesman for the Benghazi medical center said.

IPU is deeply concerned by the shooting of Afghan MP Mariam Koofi, the latest in a string of attacks on parliamentarians in Afghanistan, particularly women legislators.

Koofi, the sister of fellow MP and human rights activist Fawzia Koofi, was wounded on 15th April whilst leaving her office and is now recovering in a Kabul hospital.

Fawzia Koofi, suffered a similar attack in 2010 while travelling with her two teenage daughters.
