Focus Groups and Polling
Focus groups and polling, otherwise known as public opinion research, can be effective mechanisms for gathering insight into the opinion of the target group, thereby allowing organizers to formulate an even stronger strategy for advocacy. Without support from key constituencies and the public at-large, advocacy agendas are less likely to be successful. Surveys, polling and focus groups can serve to shape the platform, refine the issues and enhance the effectiveness of advocacy and lobbying efforts.

Burundi: High Turnout for Polls, UN Official Says
Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Tue, 2010-05-25 09:45
Summary:
More than 3.5 million people registered to vote in the polls, exceeding expectations, with 17 presidential candidates - 15 aligned with parties and two independents - taking part. The polls, Mr. Petrie said today, can serve as an example for the rest of the world that a country emerging from a painful past in a turmoil-plagued region can hold successful, peaceful elections.

Indonesia: Indonesian Women to the Peace Table
Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Mon, 2010-03-22 03:02
Summary:
Women are profoundly underrepresented in peace negotiations around the globe. In 2009, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) reviewed 21 major peace processes held since 1992 and found that women constituted less than 8percent of delegates to talks and less than 3 percent of agreement signatories.
This is a shameful record given that the United Nations specifically called on the world, through a Security Council resolution, to promote the role of women in peacemaking a decade ago.

New Zealand in the 21st century is ‘diverse’. Ethnicity, indigeneity, sexuality, age, health, occupation, income, religion & disability all define the different experiences of women. How does this diversity shape ‘women’ & ‘womanhood’ in Aotearoa today? Do our differences divide us? How might we build stronger connections among women, while respecting & celebrating our diversity? Connecting Women: Respecting Differences will explore this theme of difference & strategies for connecting diverse women.

Description:
The second 'Equal is not enough' Conference seeks to contribute to the understanding of the causes, consequences and underlying dynamics of inequalities, as well as to the understanding of contemporary policies to combat them. In challenging differences and inequalities in contemporary societies, the conference addresses different grounds of inequality, such as gender, ethnicity, sexual preference, disability, class and age, and also focuses on the comparison and intersection that can be drawn between them. It does so in four different streams, paying particular attention to law, public policies, organisations and the life course as such.

City & Province/State:
Connecticut
Country:
connecticut
Description:
From some of the oldest points of interest in the United States to some of the most modern marvels America has to offer; from the quiet and solitude of Mark Twain's small-town life to the excitement and nightlife of America's largest casinos; from the foothills of the Appalachias to the very shores on which our ancestors first set foot on the solid ground of the new world - you'll find it all here in Connecticut!
The diversity of Connecticut, one of the original thirteen colonies to declare statehood and independence, is astounding. And being one of our smallest states, it is easy to partake in some of everything the area has to offer in just a short stay, or fill an extended stay with enough different activities to appeal to any member of your family.
Spend the day walking through the woods and your evening at one of the largest casinos in the country, with time out for dinner at a world-class restaurant and an entertainment break with one of the top stars in the world. Spend the day at one of the picturesque beaches and your evening in the coziness of a Bed & Breakfast ensconced in an ancient farmhouse
With each of the major tourist areas within an hour's drive of each other, and each offering truly rural settings anchored by a major - and historical - metropolitan area, Connecticut is the place to go!

Peru: Parties Thwart Public Demand for Women in Politics
Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Mon, 2009-12-07 11:25
Summary:
Peru has been boosting the political participation of women since it passed its gender quota law in 1997, establishing that 30 percent of the spots on candidate lists must be reserved for women. This was complemented a decade later with the 2007 Equal Opportunities Act.
But "there's still no law that stipulates male-female alternation on candidate lists for parliament and municipal and regional governments, which would prevent women from being relegated to the last positions," Anel Townsend, former Women and Social Development Minister, said to IPS. Townsend was the most-voted female candidate elected to congress in 2001, and in her parliamentary activity she has promoted several gender-related initiatives.
Party leadership positions in Peru are still predominantly occupied by men, who are very reluctant to relinquish any of their power, so they place women far down on the slates of candidate where they have little chance of being elected, she added.
