The publication of those findings in the first edition constitutes only a beginning that will be pursued with further expansion and updating of the project.

Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Tue, 2011-05-10 19:28

Summary:

"If I had only known that when I was young," or "if they had only told me" are just some of the statements made by many women who seek assistance at the centre for victims of gender violence set up by the local government in a town on the outskirts of the Argentine capital. The survey on gender violence among adolescents noted that one out of four women in Argentina has been the victim of some kind of violence, and that in 2010, at least 260 "femicides" – murders in a context of gender violence – were committed in this country of 40 million people, almost all of them by the victims' current or former partners.

India: Talk of 33% quota, but only 8% women in Bihar poll fray

Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Tue, 2010-10-26 06:30

Summary:

Though their number is up from 6% in 2005 to 8% this time, still few women candidates are in the fray in 2010 Bihar polls. According to a National Election Watch (NEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms study, though parties talk about 33% representation to women in elected bodies, they are very conservative in giving them tickets. This despite the fact that the success rate of the women candidates has been better than their male counterparts, says NEW's coordinator Anjesh Kumar.

Indonesia: Indonesian Women to the Peace Table

Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Mon, 2010-03-22 02:02

Summary:

Women are profoundly underrepresented in peace negotiations around the globe. In 2009, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) reviewed 21 major peace processes held since 1992 and found that women constituted less than 8percent of delegates to talks and less than 3 percent of agreement signatories.

This is a shameful record given that the United Nations specifically called on the world, through a Security Council resolution, to promote the role of women in peacemaking a decade ago.

Description:
The second 'Equal is not enough' Conference seeks to contribute to the understanding of the causes, consequences and underlying dynamics of inequalities, as well as to the understanding of contemporary policies to combat them. In challenging differences and inequalities in contemporary societies, the conference addresses different grounds of inequality, such as gender, ethnicity, sexual preference, disability, class and age, and also focuses on the comparison and intersection that can be drawn between them. It does so in four different streams, paying particular attention to law, public policies, organisations and the life course as such.
