Violence against Women Prevalence Data: Surveys by Country

This resource presents a matrix with data available for 86 countries on the prevalence of physical and sexual violence against women, forced sexual initiation and abuse during pregnancy. It includes data for both lifetime and past-year prevalence, perpetrated by intimate and/or non-intimate partners. The data is drawn from leading international surveys: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Reproductive Health Surveys, Demographic and Health Surveys, Violence against Women Surveys and the World Health Organization Multi-Country StudyOther population-based surveys publicly available through March 2011 were used for countries with no internationally comparable survey.

Gender Justice: Key to Achieving the Millenium Development Goals

The Millenium Declaration and the eight Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) collectively herald a vision for a more just and equal world: a promise by governments in 189 countries to achieve social justice for all. Only five years remain until the target date of 2015 for achieving the MDGs. This briefing, an excerpts from UNIFEM's forthcoming Progress of the World's Women 2010/2011 on access to justice, points to key areas that must be addressed to move towards meeting the MDGs.

The WomanStats Database

This comprehensive database measures the situation and treatment of women in the world. It currently includes quantitative and qualitative data for 245 variables in over 170 countries and draws from thousands of sources. The database includes information on women in politics and violence against women, particularly in wartime. Variables are separated into law, practice and data categories.

UNIFEM Afganistan Fact Sheet 2007

This factsheet presents key statistics on women’s representation in politics, labor force, health care, and education system in Afghanistan. It also describes issues around marriage and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Afghanistan. Additionally, the factsheet lists commitments made by the Afghani government and activities taken by the UNIFEM’s office in Afghanistan to improve women’s situation in the country.

These statistics track the progress and developments regarding women in the political field. They provide an overview of all elections that took place in 2003; highlight the numbers of women elected; detail the number of women candidates; and outline special measures that have been adopted to increase women's parliamentary presence.

Women in Politics: 1945-2005 (Information Kit)

This information kit was published on the occasion of the 49th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. It is composed of six data sheets on women's participation in politics over the past sixty years. The data sheets contain information on the presence of women in national parliaments; the progress and setbacks of women in national parliaments between 1995-2005; women in the Central American Parliament and the European Parliament; women heads of state or government from 1945-2005; and women in the executive and legislative branches of government.
