Damn the Patriarchy

Looking at the most recent events in Kenya, where women have suffered political racism and violence, is to my mind only a tip of an iceberg of what women suffer in other parts of the continent. Especially where there is no voice to speak for them.

If we want to stop discrimination, we all have to double our efforts and be vocal against all forms of violence against women and girls; and I think the time has come already.

Voices of Women

Indeed, preventing women from their right to participate in the political process prevents governments from hearing the voices of women. Traditionally the greater number of women who are in office, the greater number of bills are presented that speak for the rights of traditionally marginalized groups such as children, women and minorities. For example despite representing only 14 percent of deputies, Argentina’s women parliamentarians introduced no fewer than 78 percent of the bills related to women’s rights (Jones, Mark P., ‘Legislator Gender and Legislator Policy Priorities in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies and the United States House of Representatives’, op. cit., p. 618).

By preventing and hindering women from running for political office, governments are also silencing the voices of these marginalized groups.
