World Bank Creates a Group Action Plan Entitled "Gender Equality As Smart Economics"
In September 2006, the World Bank released its Group Action Plan on gender which is titled, "gender equality as smart economics." The Action Plan, which covers 2007-2010, was introduced at a meeting at CSW to a packed room full of people. There was lively discussion about what the Plan means and how it will be implemented. Some expressed doubt that the plan will create any meaningful change, but the World Bank representative assured the crowd that it was a good first step. Gender Equality as Smart Economics
Indeed, the "gender equality as smart economics" action plan is an interesting new initiative aimed at empowering women economically. One of the interesting elements of the plan is to build the capacity of national statistical agencies to collect sex-disaggregated employment data, which is a useful tool for the policy analysis and reforms. However, the question is that whether or not this initiative will take away resources, including financial, from other programs and initiatives such as providing an equal access to education and health care. It is vital to continue the support to all of these areas of development as they are interconnected and equally important for the advancement of women in society.
Gender Equality as Smart Economics
It true that this is a good initiative, but at country levels, and for policy-makers to properly address matters of reforms, considerable attention will have to be devoted to the effectiveness and integration of gender-sensitive methodologies within national planning processes, and how M&E mechanisms tackle the various dynamics in gender inequalities in order to adjust policies, link research and practices to strengthen the scope of programmatic approaches.

Gender equality as smart economics
I agree with you that it will empower the women economically. But the most important factor is that the decision makers in any country should be convinced to integrate gender eqaulity in their national plans and policies not only in the economic field, but also in politics and social life in order to bridge the gap between men and women in all fields .
