Argentina: Targeting Teens in Prevention of Gender Violence

Soumis par iKNOW Politics le Mer Mar, 2011-05-10 19:28

Résumé:

"If I had only known that when I was young," or "if they had only told me" are just some of the statements made by many women who seek assistance at the centre for victims of gender violence set up by the local government in a town on the outskirts of the Argentine capital. The survey on gender violence among adolescents noted that one out of four women in Argentina has been the victim of some kind of violence, and that in 2010, at least 260 "femicides" – murders in a context of gender violence – were committed in this country of 40 million people, almost all of them by the victims' current or former partners.

Soumis par iKNOW Politics le Mer Mar, 2011-04-26 05:33

Résumé:

Speaking at the Women Entrepreneurs Association of Turkey (KAGİDER) April breakfast meeting, held at the Point Hotel Barbaros in İstanbul yesterday,  Bekir Ağırdır (KONDA polling company General manager) said there is at the present time severe political polarization in the nation, with 55 percent of Turks directly adopting the opinion of their political leaders. He maintained that these divisions were very difficult to overcome without the participation of women. “There are three dimensions of polarization in Turkey. These are the Turkish-Kurdish divide and those based on politics and lifestyle. It is for this reason precisely that there is a need for women politicians,” he said.

Soumis par iKNOW Politics le Mer Ven, 2010-09-03 04:25

Résumé:

Some have declared 2010 "The Year of the Woman" in politics. More apt, we should dub this year "The Year of the Businesswoman". Take a close look at the names on the fall election ballot. Many are seasoned businesswomen taking their first steps into the political arena.

This year 278 women are active candidates for governor, House and Senate in races across the country. Only the states of Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana and North Dakota do not have any women running.

Angola: Women Form Own Political Parties for Fair Representation

Soumis par iKNOW Politics le Mer Thu, 2010-08-05 01:05

Résumé:

In Madagascar, the political world is still dominated by men. Of the 32 cabinet members, only five are women. The transition's High Authority, the advisory body set up following Andry Rajoelina's takeover in March 2009, has only three women out of 41 members. Of the 22 regions in the country, none is headed by a woman, while out of more than 1,560 municipalities, only 67 are led by women mayors.

Brigitte Rasamoelina and Yvette Sylla are women with two different approaches to politics in Madagascar. One formed a political party, while the other decided to legalise her organisation as an association. But both women are considering running in Madagascar's November elections. But they know that it will not be an easy road. "We'll have to be assertive and prove ourselves," they each confided separately.
