Insights into Gender Dynamics in Marginalised Urban Communities in Jordan

The Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD) supported by Gender Social Fund and Canadian International Development Agency conducted a qualitative study researched gender relations in marginalized communities, using PEER, a participatory research method through which members of the target group (in this case poor and marginalized men and women) investigate the perceptions of their peers from within their own community.

Islamist movement calls on gov’t to withdraw from CEDAW

The Islamist movement have called on the Jordanian government to withdraw from the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) on grounds that the treaty will lead to a myriad of social problems in the country. The main issue of concern is the Cabinet's recent decision to lift its reservations on paragraph four of Article 15, which gives women freedom of mobility and choice of residence without consent of their husbands or other male family members. Al Quds Center Publish First Parliamentary Monitoring Report and Activists To Monitor Lawmakers’ Performance Through new Website

Al Quds Centre for Political Studies released the first report of the “Jordanian Parliamentary Monitor” project, which seeks to improve the Parliament’s performance by highlighting the best international experiences and practices in parliamentary performance. Al Quds has also launched the Jordan Parliamentary Monitoring website (www.jpm.jo), which provides information about individual MPs, blocs, committees, parliamentary developments and, of course, information on MPs’ performance and accomplishments in terms of legislation, oversight and addressing national policies. Recently released reports on parliamentary monitoring, MPs’ trends towards the 2009 budget, and survey of public opinion on parliament and the election law area are also on the website. Consolidated Response on Financing Women Candidates in Muslim Countries

This consolidated response highlights barriers faced by women in Muslim countries in funding their political campaigns and participating in public life. The consolidated response also discusses the impact of existing legislation, political parties, women’s organizations and international institutions on women’s participation in politics in these countries and provides strategies to overcome it.

Women, Nationality and Citizenship

This report highlights discrimination against women in nationality laws by examining laws that differentiate between women and men. It specifically looks into the acquisition and retention of nationality of women, including the nationality of their children, and examines how international law is used to address discrimination cases in nationality laws.

First Class: Profiles of Women MPs & Senators in Jordan 2003-2007

The election of an unprecedented number women (6) to the Lower House of Parliament in 2003 was a remarkable step toward strengthening women’s political participation in Jordan. The subsequent appointment of eight women to the Senate also contributed to the establishment of a “first class” of Jordanian women legislators to challenge traditional attitudes about women’s role in society. With support from the National Endowment for Democracy, NDI has produced "First Class" — a report and a documentary video profiling Jordanian women serving in the lower and upper houses of Parliament.

Documenting Women's Rights Violations By Non-state Actors

This manual, specifically addressed to groups and individuals not well versed in legal matters, provides tools to human rights activists and defenders who investigate violence perpetrated against women by non-state actors. Its goal is to offer guidance with regard to the legal definitions and human rights protection mechanisms that may help them compel States to fulfill their obligation to protect. It presents concrete examples of particular forms of violence committed against women by non-state actors and models of strategies that have been used effectively, particularly in Muslim communities.

Towards Political Empowerment for Jordanian Women

This report examines the political system in Jordan; identifies the obstacles and challenges facing women’s political empowerment; and determines the degree of prejudice in Jordanian society towards women's political empowerment. It covers three major topics: women and international instruments of human rights; Jordan's position with respect to these instruments; and the impact of these instruments on women's legal status.

Building Democracy in Jordan: Women's Political Participation, Political Party Life and Democratic Elections

This report is the result of a project carried out by International IDEA and the Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND), aimed at discussing democratic reform in Egypt, Jordan and Yemen. It focuses on three main themes: electoral system reform, the political participation of women and the development of political parties. It also identifies the challenges, opportunities and recommendations for democratic reform in Jordan.
