MPs Online: Connecting with Constituents

The report provides recommendations for MPs, constituents and for Parliament.  Primary amongst these are that MPs need to develop a policy for the use of email and strategies for digital media that define the target audience and connect with their offline strategy. Constituents benefit when MPs are online and so citizens are encouraged to promote the internet and provide examples of good practice to break down barriers amongst those MPs who are more resistant. In the digital age democracy can be driven by both sides. Finally, the report recommends a review of the licensing and re-use of content created by Parliament.

Poland: Polish feminism is no longer ridiculed

Submitted by Barbora Galvankova on Mon, 2011-04-11 06:14

Summary:

The Polish government's new commitment to gender equality is a triumph for the feminist movement's strategic change of focus.

For a good part of the last two decades, becoming a feminist was a sure way to make oneself ridiculous in Poland. You were viewed as a naive enthusiast of western ideas, supposedly irrelevant to Polish culture, or worse – a fossil from former times, a communist. Well, the days of feminist martyrdom are over: in the runup to Poland's presidency of the European Union, women's rights have become a serious and respectable topic of public debate.

NDI: "From Kitchen to Parliament" - Women in Bangladesh Look Toward the Future

Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Tue, 2010-03-30 19:36

Summary:

In Bangladesh, traditional gender roles keep most women from gaining political power. A recent forum, "Celebrating Women's Leadership in Bangladesh," brought together female MPs and other Bangladeshi women with political aspirations to inspire and encourage them to run for office and to work together across party lines to increase women's political participation in the country.

The Bangladesh Alliance for Women Leadership (BDAWL), an organization of prominent women leaders, hosted the November meeting, which was prompted by a visit to Bangladesh from Melanne Verveer, U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues. Forty-five women MPs, civil society leaders, media representatives, and officials from the U.S. embassy, NDI and BDAWL attended the forum.

Summary:

As a member of the Presidium of the Vietnam Women’s Union and chief of its legal committee from January 2006 to December 2007, Khanh was endorsed by the Union and reelected to the legislature in 2008. She is now the permanent member of the Assembly’s committee of science, technology and environment, and leader of the group of 12 women deputies.

To Quoc Khanh, too many loopholes have made this South-east Asian country’s legal system ineffective. She has said that some laws "lack quality" and has been vocal about the need for the legislature to produce better ones.
