Hallo,

As you know, Somalia and Somalis have suffered a lot. In the past 25 years, there has been a lot of death and destruction and there is still a lot of death and destruction ongoing. A lot of preparations are underway for more violence and war all over Somalia as I write this. Yet there is no talk of peace and peaceful means of resolving conflict. Why is peace building not a priority for a people who have been traumatized by conflict for over 25 years? Why are nonviolent means of resolving conflicts not taught in schools, why is it not a subject of the curriculum in all schools in Somalia?

I have been thinking really hard about these questions and about how I, as an individual, can contribute with my own input in creating the change I seek on fundamental matters such as peace in Somalia. As a response to this identified need and as an effort to bring about that much needed change, I have developed the together the ‘Peace is in our hands’ project. Using the media we will host to begin with a 2-weekly TV talk show whose main aim it will to create awareness about the dire need for an alternative means to the current escalating warfare in Somalia. I have decided to speak to the public and I intend to speak to them through the to-be televised talk shows which will focus on how we can best find answers to these questions.

Secondly, I want to be the change I seek. I want to run for Ministry of Peace and Conflict Transformation in Somalia. We don’t have one right now and have never had one in the past and Why don't we have a Minister for Peace and Non-violent Resolution of Conflicts in Somalia? It would seem logical to have one or even 2 after 20+ years of war and violent conflict! We need to go to schools, community centers and preach peace, compassion, dialogue and love. Peace therefore is in our own hands. We only have one female minister in Puntland right now.

I am seeking assistance with these 2 ideas. I don’t have a budget for them and I seek all kinds of assistance- material and immaterial. I seek advice and support in best practices. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you and we hope all is well with you and your beloved ones.

Thank you so much!

Kind regards, Sahro

I would like to know if there are any projects on e-democracy field to fight violence against women. I mean some spaces where women can help each other and organize manifestations, i.e., that may even lead to a bill or something. I'm Italian and I think we have not these kind of tools. Thank you.

Lobby for adoption

The political compettion is becoming stiffer in my country, Zambia. As a result the adoption of women is a great concern in the sense that the financial aspect is problematic as it is made as reference to failure of putting up an effective campaign.  How can i overcome this phoebia as i strongly feel it's discriminatory and robs the women an opportunity to be part of the contributors to the national development.

Enhancing Women's Participation in Elections- Advice; Experiences

In 2008, I had posted a query on iKNOW politics on women and politics and received a lot of information and support from iKNOW politics network. I am once again seeking the support and information from your network as member and would greatly appreciate your support in this regard:

Despite efforts made by the Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) to promote equal representation of women and men in public decision-making, women’s participation in governance, particularly at the local level is relatively poor. To address the gender gap in governance, the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) is undertaking a study to enhance the participation of women in elections.

As part of this objective, I am currently involved in formulating a Strategic Plan for the ECB to enhance women’s participation in elections. It is intended to provide strategic guidance for the nomination and promotion of women candidates in elections.

In this context, we would like members to:
1. Offer advice or comments on ways to enhance the participation of women in elections as voters and candidates
2. Share international best practices and lessons learned in identifying strategies to increase women’s participation in elections

The support from iKNOW politics experts and members could greatly contribute towards developing an effective strategic plan for enhancing women’s political participation in Bhutan.

Best regards,

Lily Wangchhuk

My name is Sandra Zerbo, and I am currently coordinating an MDG3 project for an independent foundation called TrustAfrica. We are based in Dakar Senegal. Entitled "Enhancing Women's Dignity", the project is co-funded by the Dutch government. It has two main goals: to decrease violence against women and increase women's political participation. The project covers seven countries: Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, DRC, Mali, Niger, and Senegal. We are currently trying to organize a 3-day training on women's political participation (around communication and advocacy skills) for 14 women leaders. The training is to take place in Dakar. We would like to know if anyone might have any materials (preferably in French) we might be able to use, or if you could point us to any organization that might be of assistance. Thank you Very much.
