DPKO/DFS-DPA Joint Guidelines on Enhancing the Role of Women in Post-Conflict Electoral Processes

"Conflict affects women and men differently. In post-conflict contexts, numerous political, socio-economic, ideological and psychological obstacles prevent women from participating fully in political life and in electoral processes."

The objective of these guidelines is to provide advice on measures that could be implemented in future electoral processes in post-conflict environments to increase the participation of women as voters, candidates, and electoral officials and to ensure that electoral processes have an equal impact on women and men.The guidelines are informed by the findings of a number of national consultations on good practices, which were held in peacekeeping missions and attended by national and international actors who have worked with women candidates, election assistants and voters.

These guidelines will be piloted in one or more countries and territories where elections are scheduled to take place and will be evaluated against each specific electoral context.

The guidelines may also be instrumental in developing partnerships with civil society and other relevant entitites.
