In Iraq, upswing in women political candidates applauded

raq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced Friday (April 12th) there has been a noticeable increase in the number of women candidates running in the upcoming local elections, scheduled for April 20th.The present political situation encouraged Iraqi women to take part in the political process more than before, IHEC officials told Mawtani. "The number of women running in the local elections went up considerably over previous elections," said Meqdad al-Sharifi, the head of IHEC's electoral department. "There are now 2,280 women candidates from among the overall number of 8,138 across Iraq (except the Kurdish region),"This level of participation is higher than any in elections "since the change of Iraq's political system, and the adoption of a democratic system in the country".
