United Kingdom: Women MP candidate quotas proposed
Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Mon, 2010-01-11 08:44
Summary:
Obligatory quotas for the number of women put forward for selection as a parliamentary candidate by each political party have been proposed. The conference on diversity issues was commissioned by the prime minister.
It wants the parties either to improve the representation of women at the 2010 general election, or face mandatory quotas for the next one.

UK: My first election as a Green party candidate
Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Mon, 2009-12-21 00:00
Summary:
Susanna Rustin hits the campaign trail in Queen's Park. Just a few months after joining a political party for the first time, I was standing in the Queen's Park Westminster by-election. The election day was an unreal prospect. I phoned my ad-hoc campaign manager, and asked what to do. Go to work, he said. Act normal. But I didn't feel very normal. I had an odd but quite enjoyable feeling of nervous expectation and exhilaration, familiar from other election days. Only, of course, no one else in the office was feeling this at all. I kept picturing my local area, imagining people on their way to vote.

UK: Assembly 'feminisation at risk'
Submitted by iKNOW Politics on Wed, 2009-11-11 12:15
Summary:
The near-50% number of female members in Welsh Assembly could drop below 30% in 2011 amid retirements and changes in party selection procedures. In 2003, 30 of the 60 members were women, which rose to 31 after a by-election in 2006.
Now the Institute of Welsh Affairs (IWA) has warned that the current tally of 28 women AMs is poised to fall to 20 or fewer at the next election.

Consolidated Response on Best Practices Used by Political Parties to Promote Women in Politics
This consolidated response highlights strategies and policies that may be used in addition to gender quotas by political parties to increase the numbers of women in politics. The strategies described in this response include establishing women’s sections in political parties, providing women candidates with training and financial assistance to hold effective campaigns, creating a forum for women to lobby and discuss policy, and offering political parties incentives for promoting women in politics.
