The election of the new Provincial Member for Kusaghe ward, Ms Victoria Sino Oloratavo, into the Western Provincial Assembly is positive news for the women of this nation, considering the low level of participation by women in both the National Parliament and the Provincial Assemblies.

On Monday 29 June, 2009, the election of new provincial leaders by the people of Western Province was successfully completed. According to the Returning Officer for Western Province, Mr. Jonathan Bana, out of the 172 candidates contesting the 26 seats in the Assembly, only 1 of the 8 women contesting were successful.

Asia-Pacific: Guide Launched to Boost Pacific Women’s Participation

Summary: 

AS the world marks International Women’s Day tomorrow, a new guide aimed at providing policy-makers and advocates with ideas on how to promote more women in Pacific legislatures was launched in the Pacific.
The Guide was launched by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the United Nations Development Programme Pacific Centre. Secretary-General of the Forum Secretariat, Tuiloma Neroni Slade, said in the Guide’s Foreword that “in the long-term, it is important that we continue to work with our Pacific communities to build greater recognition of the role that women can and should play as national leaders, including as members of our Pacific legislatures”.

Solomon Islands: Campaign for More Women in Solomon Islands Parliament

A campaign has been launched in the Solomon Islands to reserve 10 seats in Parliament for women. Minister of Women, Youth and Children Affairs, Johnson Koli, launched the Special Temporary measures campaign on Tuesday night. The campaign proposes that 10 seats be added to the existing 50 seat Parliament with elected women representing 9 provinces and Honiara.
