Description:
The President is elected by popular vote to serve a 7-year term. In the National Assembly (Majlisi Milliy), 34 members are elected by indirect vote to serve 5-year terms. Of these, 25 are selected by local deputies and 8 are appointed by the president, while 1 seat is reserved for the former president.
In the Assembly of Representatives (Majlisi Namoyandagon), 22 members are elected through a party-list proportional representation system and 41 members are elected by majority vote in single-member constituencies. All members serve 5-year terms.

Summary:
Tajikistan's Islamic Renaissance Party (IRP), the only officially registered Islamic party in Central Asia, wants to boost its two-seat presence in the Tajik parliament in the next elections, scheduled for February 2010. To achieve that goal, the party is seeking to shrug off its old image of a conservative rural party, recruiting many women and young technocrats.

UNIFEM Annual Report 2007–2008
This report highlights UNIFEM's work to empower women in economic and public spheres, including achieving gender equality in democratic governance. Among the highlights during the year 2007–2008 were initiatives in empowering women in politics, advancing legislation on women’s rights, putting sexual violence on the security agenda, and engaging men against gender-based violence, among others.
Gender Equality for Development Effectiveness
This paper describes experiences of the CIS countries with integrating gender equality in national policies and budgets. It includes recommendations on improving gender analysis throughout national plans, strengthening links between policy and budgets, improving statistical development, and increasing national civil service capacities.
Gender Responsive Budgeting: Manual for Trainers
This manual specifically seeks to build understanding of gender responsive budgeting as a tool for promoting gender equity and transparency in budget policies and processes. This version of the UNDP Manual has a specific reference to Central and Eastern Europe and the CIS region.

Drafting Gender-Aware Legislation: How to Promote and Protect Gender Equality in CEE and CIS
The handbook provides a comparative overview of gender-aware legislation and practices in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. It also describes a comprehensive approach to influencing legislation and implementation processes, and provide detailed checklists for reference when analyzing legislation and its implementation.
Bridging the Gender Digital Divide
This report maps the situation of gender and ICTs in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, identifying trends, gaps, as well as some good practices. It focuses particularly on the integration of gender in relation to issues such as process and control, education, training and skills and development, and their use to enhance opportunities for human development.
KARAT Coalition
KARAT is a regional coalition that works to ensure gender equality in the CEE/CIS countries, monitors the implementation of international agreements and lobbies for the needs and concerns of women in the region at all levels of decision-making fora.
