Iraqi National Action Plan for Implementation of the UNSCR 1325
Women are the first and most affected victims of conflicts around the world. Iraqi women know this as they have suffered difficult conditions and catastrophes in the aftermath of several wars and economic sanctions in the past decades, starting from the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980’s, to the Kuwait invasion events until the conflict emanating from the fall of Saddam’s regime and the foreign invasion.
For this reason, the Federal Government of Iraq and the Regional Government of Kurdistan have committed to the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) in order to increase women participation in peace and security matters. In this context, the two governments developed a National Action Plan (INAP) to further develop the role of women in the Iraqi society, in cooperation with the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defense in Baghdad, and Ministry of Interior and Women’s High Council in Kurdistan and the Iraqi NAP1325 Initiative (I-NAP1325 Initiative), an initiative of women’s rights organizations and networks across Iraq and Kurdistan. The adoption of the INAP makes Iraq the first country in the Middle and North Africa to develop such a strategy to implement UNSCR 1325 on the national level.
