Are there skills that women lack that keep them from succeeding in politics? If yes, what are the skills that women lack?
Women in Politics
Working with women activists in the Former Soviet Union, I have found that it is not so much a "dearth" of skills that keep women from participating in politics with the success of their male counterparts, but rather, and more importantly, the types of skills that women have and the type of politics within individual countries. Looking at the skills issue first, there are some general skills that continue to be a focus of training programs, and with good reason. These include communication skills, presentation skills, and working with media. Obviously, the majority of women active in social or political spheres, has a good grasp of these skills already, however the challenge is using these skills within the political framework of one’s country. By that I mean, the challenges for women working in politics is adapting their skills to the political climate or (and this is much more challenging) adapting the political climate to their skills. Helping politics to become more comfortable with the communication, coalition and presentation styles of women leaders will take time because women, have different priorities. Rather than be heard, women want to be understood. Rather than win an argument, women want to identify common ground. For how great governments are, these priorities are not inherent and hence, women have more challenges to succeed in politics. That does not mean that they cannot, but it means that as they do, they will have to re-shape what politics mean and how governments operate.

Yo pienso que las mujeres deben recibir entrenamiento en liderazgo. Lo podemos ver como hay mas probabilidades que mujeres que vienen de familias políticas se conviertan en políticas o lideres. La razón es que ellas aprenden indirectamente viendo como actúan los miembros de sus familias que son políticos. La política se discute en la mesa de la comida dentro de la familia o con amigos.Para las mujeres que no nacen en esa clase de familia, la cosa es mas difícil ya que no reciben ese entrenamiento indirecto que un familiar político puede brindar ni con una mano amiga que las introduzca en el circulo de la política.Tampoco es que los hombres nacen con todas las habilidades para ser políticos, pero cuentan con tiempo libre para dedicarse a actividades públicas que les brinda oportunidades para conocer gente de la política o conexiones importantes. Así mismo podrían hacerlo las mujeres, pero muy pocos esfuerzos se han hecho a nivel de la sociedad para facilitarles las cosas. Entrenamiento básico seria: como hablar en publico, negociación y auto-estima serian tres habilidades básicas que se pudieran ofrecer.----------------------English version (more or less)I think that women need to be trained in how to be a leader. You could see how women that had been born in a family of politicians are more likely to become politicians or leaders themselves. They learn by watching their husbands or fathers, discussing politics in the dinner table or with friends of the family. For women who are not born in that kind of family, things are more difficult as they do not count with role models that help them in their way up. It is not that men are born leaders, men are made leaders because they have more time to network, and to make things happen. So, women can, but up to this moment very few efforts have been made to make this happen. Training should include public speaking, negotiation, and self-esteem.
Leadership Training for Women
Florence A. Wellington-Hamil : I think that there is a very strong argument for leadership training for women. While at Andrews University, a private Seventh-day Adventist institution in Michigan I learned that women who attend all-female schools had a higher representation in leadership positions in the United States government than persons who attended co-educational institutions. So I agree in essence with Lilianauw's point that women who have role models to emulate in leadership positions are "trained" to be leaders, whether it is informally in the home setting or in the wider world. That is why I would advocate changes at the policy level. For instance, when I lectured to students at the International University of the Caribbean, a fledgling institution launched by the United Church of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, I advocated for a male and FEMALE leader on the basis of this discovery. The fact that the Regional Head was also female provided another positive example of a female in a leadership position. By supporting policy changes suchas these in our educational institutions, we broaden the pool of potential women leaders as the percentage of women who come from political families may be miniscule in comparison with the wider female population. I agree with the suggested topics for the training program. In addition, I would add networking, mentoring skills, and cultural awareness. Women from different backgrounds, whether racial, educational, social,national and even tribal have varied perspectives which can lead to misunderstandings, distrust and a policy of exclusion on the basis of our differences. We also have to be trained to learn to work together despite these differences.

Collègues!Il y a une erreur dans les habilités de la femme latino-américaine! Je vis dans le Brazil, à Rio Grande Do Sul, un état considéré machiste. Je comprends bien ce qui à collègue a dit, mais, pour toute règle il y a une exception. Existent beaucoup de femmes, comme moi, qui combattent pour leurs droits, sans avoir besoin de l'utilisation du sexe, pour réussir bonus : dans le travail, à l'université, dans la vie. Ce que nous avons besoin est savoir ce que réellement nous voulons, qui nous sommes, pour où nous allons et ce que nous prétendons faire. Les hommes sont des fruits nôtre : petits de grands-pères, de mères, de femmes, de soeurs, de petites amies, etc. Toute femme finit, d'une forme inconscient, en favorisant le machisme. Cela est inséré dans les générations. Donc, pour que tout cela change, pour qu'ayez respect par nous même et dans les faites respecter devons aller à la lutte : travailler, étudier, montrer nos valeurs. Là oui, nous aurons de l'égalité de sexe, de professionnalisme, de respect. Rien ne dure pas pour toujours, la preuve de cela est que beaucoup de femmes réussissent à avoir des positions de direction dans toutes les devants de travail; dans la politique ; dans le monde en général. Enragez dans paix, dans la recherche dont dans il les appartient par droit. Sans créer des impasses et sans montrer que l'homme est un ennemi nôtre. Au contraire: il est notre partenaire, a besoin de nous, aussi. Donc tout, je crois que la paix, la nécessité d'autoestima et l'amour, près d'un professionnalisme conquis avec griffe, les ira donner le soleil qui brille, notre faveur, que de telle façon nous attendons.
