Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women will work for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
        
The UN Women Country Office in Santo Domingo has a modest programme through which technical support, quality policy advice and services are provided to different stakeholders and partners to help ensure delivery of UN Women’s mandate related to gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Internship is based in Santo Domingo and will support the design and implementation of activities undertaken by the UN Women Country Office in the Dominican Republic. The Intern will work under the supervision of the National Gender Advisor. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Key tasks:

Support the implementation of activities of the UN Women Country Office:

  • Support the development and implementation of the Annual Work Plan (AWP) through the compilation, analysis and presentation of information;
  • Provide support in fact-checking, analysing, organizing and preparing briefing documents, statements, talking points and reports.
  • Prepare inputs for timely submission of reports on results;
  • Ensure that information on national activites are included and updated in the UNCT website;
  • Support dissemination and communication actions for the activities carried out by the national programme;
  • Provide other assistance for the national programme as required.

Support the implementation and monitoring of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) in the Dominican Republic

  • Support follow up of UN Women’s outputs and indicators included in the UNDAF;
  • Support the Country Office in its role as Secretary to the Interagency Working Group tasked with following up on the Women's empowerment component of the 2012-2016 UNDAF through logistical and secretarial services for the monthly meetings;
  • Ensure that the group’s activities are included and updated in the UNCT website.

Support the UN Women Country Office in the UN Cares interagency group and other groups, as needed:

  • Prepare brief reports on participation to keep the National Gender Advisor informed;
  • Participate in other interagency groups, as needed.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have studies in Gender, Social Sciences, International Development, or other similar subjects at the university level;
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Experience:

  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in supporting web-based management systems;
  • Experience in working in a web-based environment.

Language:

  • Excellent written and spoken Spanish is required;
  • Working knowledge of other UN Official languages is an asset.

Conditions:

  • UN Women will not pay for the internship; all the expenses connected with it will be borne by the intern;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The Intern must provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan;
  • The Intern will not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of my internship or for the six months immediately following the expiration date thereof;
  • The Intern will be personally responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.

Once the candidate has been selected, the following additional documents need to be submitted:

  • Letter of enrolment from school or proof of (Master’s programme) graduation if within less than one year;
  • Scanned visa document/scanned passport document if no visa is required;
  • Scanned medical insurance document.
