Source:

"Strenght of unity of thought and action as a powerful agent for change to achieve gender equality within one generation"

This message, among others, was strongly voiced by the Women Speakers of Parliament who attended the 10th Meeting, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) at the United Nations headquarters in New York, 29-30 August 2015.

After two days of intense strategising, networking and exchanges of concrete examples and experiences, the 24 female Speakers of Parliament (out of 46 in the world) came forward with innovative recommendations on how to mainstream gender equality into the work of Parliaments. Particular emphasis was put on the education of young people to see women as leaders and thus on the role that women and as well as men Parliamentarians have as role models. Recommendations on topics such as the economic empowerment of women, ending violece against women, gender-sensitive budgeting, and women, peace and security were made. The outcomes of the Women Speakers’ Meeting are now fed into and echoed at the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (31 August-2 September).

iKNOW Politics was present at the Meeting and interviewed some of the Women Speakers of Parliament. The videos will soon be made available to our members!
