India: Women want voice in poll manifestoes

Women members of prominent NGOs, representatives of political parties and activists attended a discussion forum where speakers demanded that political parties include in their election manifestos issues related to women.

The discussion was organised by Gujarat Mahila Federation at SLU College in the city.

The women’s issues that received special attention were the problem of child marriage, high mother and child mortality rate, violence against women, education of women and 30% reservation for women in assembly elections, among others Ilaben Pathak of Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group (AWAG) said that political parties must include in their manifestoes the promise to enact stringent laws to check child marriages.
