An insight into Malaysia’s Women Parliamentary Caucus

Women’s inclusion in the present cabinet membership is at 6.7%; only two out of 30 ministers are females, a similar situation as in the previous cabinet.

While the number of women candidates who stood for the 2013 general election increased over time, the number of female legislators continues to be low.

Women account for only 10.4% of the total MPs at the lower house. Likewise, only 11% of the state assembly members are women. As critics note, there is a stunted progress in women’s access to political leadership despite the Federal Constitution prohibiting gender discrimination.
