Viet Nam: Project to Promote Women’s Political Participation Approved

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has allowed the Vietnam Lawyers’ Association to receive a project to promote women’s political participation in Vietnam. The one-year project, funded by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Asia and Pacific Affairs (EAP) Women’s Issues Fund, will be carried out in 10 northern and central provinces.

Vietnam: UN-Vietnam Joint Programme on Strengthening Gender Equality Signed

A joint programme between the Vietnamese Government and the United Nations on gender equality was signed today. With a total budget of over US$4.6 million, of which more than US$4.5 million comes from the Spanish Government, the programme aims to improve the capacity of the national and provincial authorities and other duty bearers to effectively implement, monitor and evaluate the Law on Gender Equality and the Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control.

Members of the National Assembly (NA) Committee for Social Affairs focused their discussions on how to enhance gender equality at the NA plenary session from April 23-25. Targets for gender equality are to eliminate discriminatory treatment because of gender, create equal opportunities for both men and women to boost socio-economic development and human resources and strengthen relations and cooperation between the sexes in every social field.

As a member of the Presidium of the Vietnam Women’s Union and chief of its legal committee from January 2006 to December 2007, Khanh was endorsed by the Union and reelected to the legislature in 2008. She is now the permanent member of the Assembly’s committee of science, technology and environment, and leader of the group of 12 women deputies.To Quoc Khanh, too many loopholes have made this South-east Asian country’s legal system ineffective. She has said that some laws "lack quality" and has been vocal about the need for the legislature to produce better ones.

Many arguments by female National Assembly (NA) deputies have helped to resolve burning issues in recent times. The Party and State are aware of the need to increase the number of female NA deputies. They aim to raise the proportion of women NA deputies in the upcoming election to 30 percent. However, to achieve this target requires efforts from women and support from Party committees at grass root levels and local administrations as well as accurate view of women’s roles in socio-political activities.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan yesterday asked local authorities to better women's participation in politics while reviewing a 10-year programme on gender equality and women's advancement. At a conference on the topic held in the Mekong delta's Can Tho yesterday, Nhan called on the National Committee for the Advancement of Women and the Department for Gender Equality to start implementing projects to improve women's political skills to reach the 2020 targets on the proportion of women in politics.

The proportion of women engaging in the politics is increasing, showing the effectiveness of the State and Party’s policies that designed to enhance women’s role in society. According to the Female Parliament Members Group under the Vietnam National Assembly’s Committee for Social Affairs, between 1999 and now, Vietnam always has a female vice president and women accounted for 25.76 percent in the National Assembly during the 2007-2011 tenure, the highest rate among eight ASEAN countries that have a parliament.
