Political parties in the country have been asked to ensure that at least 30 per cent of all elected positions at the districts, regional and national levels are occupied by women.

The electorate have also been advised to vote for more women to occupy political positions instead of always giving preference to men.

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has urged women to participate in the forthcoming parliamentary elections by turning up in large numbers on Election Day.

The polls are slated for September.

In a meeting on Wednesday, NEC Chairperson Prof. Mbanda Kalisa underscored the importance of women's role in teh conduct of successful elections.

Film: Burundi has one of the highest allocations of seats in parliament for women, numbering 36% of all MPs. There is also a 30% quota policy for women's political participation at lower levels of the administration. 

Despite this progress, women's voices are not always heard.
