A group of Kuwaiti women including government officials, members of the private sector, civil society representatives and entrepreneurs joined a workshop on political campaign management and leadership skills held within the framework of the 8th Annual Conference on Women and Leadership convened by the Kuwait University Women’s Research and Studies Centre (WRSC) between October 22 -25 in Kuwait City.

Manama: Safa Al Hashem has made history in Kuwait by becoming the first woman lawmaker to win seats in two consecutive parliamentary elections.

Taking 2,036 votes on Saturday, Safa, who made her parliamentary debut in December, was ranked fifth on the 10-member list of the winners of the Third Constituency on Saturday. She was one of the eight women candidates who signed up to run despite concerns that the society was not ready to support women in parliament.

More than 400 people have signed up to run as candidates in the Kuwaiti parliamentary elections on July 27.

The list of 418 hopefuls at the end of the 10-day registration process on Saturday afternoon includes eight women, Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) reported.

Under election rules, candidates who wish to pull out of the race must do so at least one week before the elections.

More than 400 people have signed up to run as candidates in the Kuwaiti parliamentary elections on July 27.
